  • Is there a 35mm adapter that can be used with the 301, to use nikon lenses?

    Serdar

    • use a letus extreme/ elite/ ultimate and a 1/3′ relay from letus.

  • Hello. I am making corparate movies. Should i buy Panasonic HPX 301 or Sony EX1? Thank´s for your answer.

    Hjalmar Olsen

    • both good cameras. HPX better form factor. EX1 nicer images.

  • how does this carmera compare with the sony ex-3…thanks

  • Thanks for the review Philip. Couple of questions:

Were you still seeing noise at minus gain settings?

The DOF seems shallower than I would have expected with the stock lens, were you at the end of the tele and wide open? Even some of the wider shots looked like they had some DOF!

    • just by using the end of the lens or the macro. Yes there is a lot of noise with this camera. -3db doesn’t take away noise, the best way to reduce noise is using the picture profile settings within the camera. I don’t have one so I cannot advise but I would check out dvxuser.net

  • Ooops just read your answer to the same question on Exposure room… In answer to your question to the other guy, I want to shoot stock, corporates and commercial/viral work for the internet. Also it would be my only camera (apart from my 5d mk2). My feeling about the HPX-301 is that it has more of what I may need in one machine without attaching anything and the Codec would appear to be better for stock footage. Size is the only issue having said that I’m not sure that once the EX3 is packed in a bag it’s that much smaller really as it’s a funny shape. I have plenty of time to make the choice however.

My main requirement for the camera is stock however.

    • my main concerns with 300 is the noise levels and the sensor wobble…it’s a really nice camera with flaws…

  • Hi Philip,

Love the review. Very nice camera. It would be really good to know how you think it compares to the EX3? It’s a hard question to answer I guess but it terms of outright versatility which do you think is the more flexible camera if you want to buy one main camera. Does the 1/2″ chip in the EX3 deliver a superior image in the end?

    Kaveh.

    • the ex3 still gives you a superior image, less skew, almost no noise and better in low light

      • Ah well that says it all really. Thanks for the reply. And you can still record better codecs with the EX3 if required using the HD-SDI out and something like the AJA Ki Pro or Convergent Design Nano Flash.

Thanks again, this is really useful and good for my wallet too.

        Kaveh.

        • No worries..I hope firmware updates can improve the sensor wobble on the 300…love it other than that!

  • Hey Philip,

Enjoy your work and reviews. I know that you are resisting direct comparisons between the EX-3 and HPX-300/301e, but which one performs better in low light.

    Thanks!
    Allen

  • Looks like a lovely camera. Panasonic should do very well with this. Nice review!

  • Hi Steven, I mostly zoomed in or used macro, no adaptor was used for the panny shots. I used the SGBlade and EX1 for the pretties of the camera itself. The relay when used with the ex3 has no quality degradation. It just looks different,.

  • Excellent review! Wondering if 35mm adaptor was used on Panny shots, or if you zoomed in with stock lens. Also, how much of a factor is quality degradation from use of Hien’s relay+Ultimate? Neglible, discernable? Thx!

  • I’m wondering given that it does employ CMOS chips, if we’ll the see the same rolling shutter problems that have plagued the EX1/3? Did you test for that? Otherwise, great review. Thanks!

  • Well done!

  • Keep on rockin!
