September 20, 2009 at 22:48I travel with a really first rate cinematographer who uses a 700 CD cam or Red One. If I want to shoot pick up establishing shots, which camera will give me better looking video to match with these great cameras: The new Cannon 7D or the EX-3?
Watch all your videos. You have an incredible eye….just amazing looking video.

September 21, 2009 at 07:31Thank Bob. The 7d is a great camera but not a “true” video camera. The EX-3 is an amazing all rounder…depends what you need. Take into account sound etc….

June 6, 2009 at 18:07Hi there, great video, I’ve seen both your videos on the JVC 700, and the Hpx301 (300) my question is do you think they will fix the skewing on the Hpx 301 (300) and if you was buying a camera in the $10k range, which of these camera’s would you buy? May 24, 2009 at 11:28Well, if anyone knows of something, would love to know about it. When sending EX footage to Avid editors in QT format (native), I get the usual Avid editor response – please may we have it on DVCAM tape. I’d hope the MP4 gets wrapped into the native Avid format.

Here’s my question to you. I mainly create educational DVD’s in the US. Right now, I’m using a Sony Z1U HDV camera. Looking to get into something else, tapeless.
I edit in Final Cut and I’m looking at this JVC camera and thinking how much time I’d save in logging tape.
However, I am torn between buying this JVC, or going with either the EX1 or the EX3. The EX3 is a bit higher on price, but if given a choice, which camera would you suggest? Thanks so much for any advice, you’re reviews are great!

April 14, 2009 at 17:39Well, the JVC is a lot cheaper and uses cheaper media and is nicer to actually use. BUT the EX3 is much better picture quality and low light

nice shots from JVC…..just one question-is the picture quality better from EX-3 then JVC thanks to 1/2 block??
How do You get best quality DV/DVD out of EX-3??
I use both EX-3 and Sony F330 and I find SD pictures far better from F330.

April 8, 2009 at 22:30Yes. the EX3 is full HD CMOS whereas the JVC is 720p upscaled.
It is tricky getting best way to get dvd from ex3. Macvideo.tv describe a very good way. Check them out

April 4, 2009 at 18:58Aside from being what looks like a really great camera, the player above has got to be the most cumbersome one I’ve seen in a while. For me, it would not upsize to a full screen and often got out of sync and/or just stopped on it’s own. Maybe it was a server thing but Vimeo HD full rez play without a hitch, might want to check into that.
All in all, I made it through the video and was pleased to hear of the offerings of this camera and wonder how well the format will interface with Avid?

April 4, 2009 at 19:03you mean the exposure room embed? there is no full screen on the embeds. it tells you to visit XR to see it full screen. Not had any problems with out going out of sync. Checked. Any other reports from people?

March 26, 2009 at 16:50Nice pro coverage Phil. I still think Tom has a point about interval shooting. You can shoot with the slow shutter in real time, and then quickly ramp up the speed to lose the duped frames in post, right? It is a bit of extra work, but there is no loss of actual capability – except field review of the effect I suppose – which is nice, even for those of us weaned on film….

Phil – you should get JVC to lend you one of these babies – it really is an elegant solution to limiting DOF and accessing quality optics.

The image flip option is exciting though. What would you need to mount say a G35 adapter directly to the body? A rely lens of some sort?
Could this potentially be the ultimate run and gun 35mm depth of field camera? Awesome!

March 24, 2009 at 13:09cheers Tom. The camera has slow shutter, if you had interval record you could get awesome streaky timelapse that I do so often on my EX.

Must say I don’t find the lack of timelapse a problem as (unless you want to film for 24 hrs or something) I find it much better to film in real time and on the NLE later decide what looks best, what smooth speed changes should be made in the TL sequence and so on.
