Hi Philip,

I'm desperately looking for a new camera (currently working with the Sony FX7). I'll be using it mostly for low-budget films and music videos. Now my biggest concern is finding a camera which can more or less recreate a film-look. I know that it is basically impossible for a digital camera to come even close to real film that's why I'm looking for the camera that comes closest to reaching film-like results. I know a lot can be done in post-production and with the Letus adapter but put these things aside what would you recommend to be the best camera for making films and in an affordable price-range (under 8000 EURO). I was considering the EX1/EX3 but I have no idea how suitable they are for making movies. Any help will be truly appreciated as I have been searching and searching for months now!

Philip, your guidance and advice have been invaluable over the last month while I've debated what new camera to use for producing/directing documentary films. Thank you very much for sharing your passion for cameras, and spreading the knowledge. Some of us appreciate the technobabble. :)

However, that said, you've planted some firm seeds of doubt! You are too much of a natural salesman! :)

Thanks to your awesome review of the EX3, I can't decide if I should invest in a Canon 7D complete with redrock/zacuto kit and several lenses, or if I should go for for the more traditional "balanced", "well rounded" route of the EX3.

Honestly, I feel like both are solid choices. As much as I'd love to invest in both, currently I can only buy one.

I'll be traveling a lot, doing tons of handheld work, and spending a great deal of time outdoors. I need a comfortable workflow that allows for hassle-free editing. Do you have any advice? Thanks in advance.

Hi Phil,
I just did a day's shoot on Friday for the first time with the EX3 (am a seasoned Z1 pro) and struggled with how to hold it for handheld work. I found a lot of weight on my right wrist and wasn't quite sure how to balance it all - after a day of shooting with the weight of the wideangle adaptor too I was pretty sore.
Any tips on going handheld and keeping it steady other than using a steadicam?
Thanks,
Steve

Phillip,

Your amazing bro. check out my vimeo when you get a chance. I work with the EX3 and i love it.

Any technical suggestions? I use just the stock lenses. No adapters or lenses. Natural lighting. Something about them is not making me happy tho... cant put my finger on it. Love your work and knowledge.

1080/720p - 1/48 shutter - 24p

Hi Philip,

can you briefly explain the EX3 compression rate. I am about to start a series and wanted to go EX3 with letus adaptor. But I've been told the footage is not acceptable to BBC and others for a full programme and only has a half rating. I have heard about the nanoflash but its expensive. do you know if EX3 in its native output to sxs is treated by the major broadcasters as acceptable.

thanks
