Making sense of depth of field, Part 3 : DocumentaryTech
October 19, 2009 at 11:44[...] Elite I’ve paired it with has the backfocus adjustment on it. Either way, you can fine tune. Philip Bloom, who is a guru of DOF adapters, recommends setting up your back focus with the adapter turned off, so you can use the grain on it [...]

April 22, 2009 at 08:25Hi Philip,
Keep up the good work.
Just a quick question about your shots with the letus extreme and ex1. If you can’t shoot fast shutter speeds how did you do the slow mo in the clips? In post? How, because they look very good indeed?
Thanks

January 22, 2009 at 08:22Andrew. Are you using an ex1? Do you have the optimization kit?
also your delay issue is because you have steadyshot on. take it off, it doesn’t work with adaptors.

January 22, 2009 at 03:57ok, we also are tilting and panning the camera and are experiencing some delay is that because the GG is moving? we are also experiencing that the GG is not centered in the monitor. can you adjust this?

November 11, 2008 at 08:19The Rookie Videographer with an HV20
Hello Mr. Philip,
I’m a recent graduate of Documentary Production. The university’s Avid System crashed and I lost my documentary. Since then I’ve had to rebuild my reel. I have an HV20. I’m excited that the Letus can work on my camera and only for 1000.00 Is there something else you’d recommend for my camera? And is there a place where you explain online how one can break down how to utilize Final Cut Pro settings with the camera? What lenses to use? What can I use? Limitations? etc…

October 21, 2008 at 13:28Hi,
How far do you zoom in with the ex1 to get edge to edge sharpness? 74?
Thanks,
Robert

October 20, 2008 at 15:14Hello Philip, thanks for your films and explanations. Very useful and beautiful at the same time.
I’ve been thinking about getting a EX3 and a lotus adapter to shoot my feature. I was wondering if the quality you get using this “tandem” is any different from what you’d get using a EX1 and the 35mm adapter.
Thanks again,
Camila

October 14, 2008 at 19:47Great work! Great video! Thanks for sharing this with us.
You mentioned the Brevis adapter in this video about the Letus. From what I’m reading, it looks like the Brevis is easier/faster to put on and take off, and has the upper hand on lighting. I would like to purchase one of these adapters, and I’ve narrowed my choice to these two.
Any wisdom you want to share about comparing the two?
Cheers,
Everett

October 1, 2008 at 01:15Why do you recommend prime lenses?
I have a heap of excellent Nikon zoom lenses for my Nikon D3 – what’s wrong with using zoom lenses?

It’s easy as you can control the light coming into the camera using the stock lens and ND filters

September 29, 2008 at 18:51You’re a good man! I’ve been hearing of the Letus and seeing your excellent films, but until seeing this video I still had only a vague idea whether it was convenient enough for me to use in my kit. By golly, I think it might just be something even I could figure out! Now I just need to find some used prime lenses. I’ve been scanning ebay for them and not having much luck yet. I’ll keep trying.
One question about the “golden rule”; is it difficult to keep within the 5.6 boundary? Will a common 3-light setup and a 50mm 1.8 lens do the job? How about outdoors in daylight with a 50mm 1.8?
Thank you Philip.

superb work. you have a great eye for aesthetics.
I would love to see this demo with a 3 camera set up for comparison. The two you have plus a 35mm with a panavision camera.
