New short film: A day at the races

We shot this short film with the hotrodcameras.com modified 7D PL mount that you can read all about here.

It was shown for the first time at the LA HD-DSLR masterclass I took yesterday in Hollywood that was a great success. Two 4 hour classes one after the other. A lot of fun, killed my voice though!

Jeremy Thomas from Raw Works cut the short and colour graded it and did a great job on it. The crew was minimal about 4 of us in total. Read more

New short “Toronto Falls”: Shooting timelapse through windows!

As some of you know from the A&E Intervention: Timelapse that I was TRICKED into doing, I am loving my timelapse with my stills cameras. I am using all sorts. My Canon 5Dmk2, 7D, 500D, Lumix GF1, GH1, Ricoh GR3. Used loads.

I was in the US and Canada recently, in Chicago to do the Great Zacuto Shootout and then in Toronto to see Sara. Whilst there I had some great views, both from my hotel in Chicago. The Sutton Place Hotel who gave me a great view after I explained what I wanted to do, my hotel in Toronto, the CN Tower and the Hilton at Niagara Falls.

When I shot my short film “Sky”, much of it was from up high too…but not through glass. Glass causes many issues, some of which I hope to cover here.

I have been in the US for about 2 and a half weeks doing all sorts of stuff. Re:Frame, Critics and then I went to LA to hang out for a few days. I went on location with “24″ to meet DP Rodney Charters who was a smashing bloke. I also had a great meet up with over 30 people I knew mostly from just the net/ twitter etc and of course I did some filming.

Short film of RE:Frame San Francisco made up entirely of stills

476x238bloombannerV1

zfinderADforBLOOMV3

Here I am in San Francisco at the latest Re:Frame event. I have the new Panasonic Lumix GF1 to play with but I have been mostly shooting with my 7d and 5dmkII…BUT mostly in stills mode. I have done a 36 hour timelapse on my 7D and I have also documented the event, again mostly in stills.

Now the shutter life of the 7D is around 150,000 shots. In the past 4 days I have shot around 16,000 photos. So do be careful and don’t make lots of films the same way as I have done as it will you camera eventually. Those shots will add up! Although if you do this you can get if fixed, it’s not throw away camera time!

There are some very talented people in this film. Scott Bourne, Joe Simon, Karen Abad, Kevin Shahinian, Bruce Patterson, Jason Magbanua, Kristen* and LOADS MORE!! Do mention in comments who else you spot!!

Yet more 7d footage, this time nice slow motion

This week I have been at WEVA as part of our training and mentoring for digital filmmaking company, F-Stop Academy

We have done seminars on the 5dmkII and on Film Look. I took these portraits of people there on the 7d shooting at 720p 60p and slowing down to 24p in Cinema tools to get great slow motion. Thanks to everyone in the film!

More Canon 7d footage

Here are some shots from last weekend’s Dublin Workshop from the F-Stop Academy. Shot on a prototype Canon 7d and a Canon 35mm f1.4 lens.

Just some random bits and pieces so you can see some daylight footage that I shot before I shot “Dublin’s People”

None of this is graded.

Dublin’s People: Shot on a Canon 7d in native 24p

Been a hell of a weekend. F-Stop Academy has been in Dublin for our first official workshop. Been a great success. This little piece was filmed at the end of the hands on shooting part of the Cinematography workshop in Dublin when we were in wind down mode (and after a number of Appletinis!)

I took the Canon 7d, Zacuto Tactical rig, Z-Finder V2 and one lone lens, a Canon 35mm f1.4, which becomes more like a 50mm lens on the 7d. So a bit like what I did with Sofia’s People (but I didn’t have the Zacuto rig for that).

My first short shot with the Canon 7d: “Shaving it back”

I only got it this morning, but me being me meant I had to get something up asap. Even though I am now in Dublin for the first F-Stop Academy Workshop this weekend. I took a few silly shots in the bar whilst having a proper man’s cocktail then went for dinner. So I didn’t start shooting this until just before midnight.

beardWhat I most missed about using the 5dmkII a lot is the inability to do slow motion in camera. I am so used to it with cameras like the EX1/3, HVX200 etc and even the GH1. So I wanted to do my first short ultilising the ability to do slow motion.

Shooting on 5dmkII with candlelight, glidetrack, vari-nds

P1030343

This week I did another Canon 5dMkII shoot. It was for a client of mine , Russian Hour , whom I went to Siberia with three times last year. You can see a couple of the shorts I shot out there here and here. It was to film famous Russian actor Boris Burlyaev read the poems of Dmitry Mizgulin. The location was Chiswick, West London, at the Russian Orthodox Church.

Originally it was going to be an EX3/ Relay/ Letus Ultimate Shoot but the plan was to use lots of candlelight so that meant that it was not going to work. That’s a pretty good low light combination, adaptor wise, but not sensitive enough for what I needed. So it was the 5dmkII again with it’s astonishing low light capabilities. Down side was recording sound separately and having to convert to 25p in post. But there was little movement, all on tripod with dolly shots so the rolling shutter issues of the 5d would not cause a problem. As long as you are aware of the camera’s limitations you can get great stuff from it.
