New short film “Sea”

I shot this over a couple of hours on a rotten windy day in San Francisco. It was filmed at Sutro Baths ruins.

The opening shots of the frothy water are straight out of the camera with no colour correction, real black and white, the light flickering is all natural light.

The “alien” cave shot onwards is all graded with Magic Bullet which you can get 20% off with code bloom 20 at the redgiantsoftware checkout.

Music is by James Newton Howard from Lady in the Water.

I will have some of these shots up soon with natural sound recorded with the Holophone Portamic Pro 5.1.

I used the DP slider for the dolly shot. Review coming soon.

5DmkII conformed to 24p and also Twixtor plug in used.

Lenses. 14mm F2.8L, 50mm F1.2L, 100mm Macro F2.8L, 90mm F2.8 TS, 70-200mm F2.8 IS

The great HD-DSLR meet up with new Video interview!!

I want to see just how many HD-DSLR shooters we can get in one place at one time. So the day after my LA masterclass I propose that if as many of you can get to LA on the 7th March come with your HD-DSLR to Venice Beach just outside the sidewalk cafe for 12pm and see just how many of us can make it! Please spread the word with message boards, forums, friends etc. Hey, even if you don’t have a HD-DSLR come along with a camera and document it. Be great to set what everybody gets out of the same situation!

We can have a nice drink or two and some grub afterwards!

Below is an interview I did at the Bay Area meet-up last week with Newsblaze.com and Michael Sato about why I do the meet ups and about the big meet up in Venice Beach coming soon.

F 0.95 50mm lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras!??!?!

I was contacted last night by a company called Noktor who are going to loan me their new 50mm F 0.95 lens for the micro four thirds system for a couple of weeks. I have no idea how much it will cost but as soon as it get it I will stick on my Lumix GF1 as I don’t have my GH1 with me and take some video and stills. SUPER FAST!!

I was lucky enough to shoot with the Leica M9 and the 0.95 50mm lens the other day. I want one, but my god that is expensive! Let’s see how much this one goes for!

Modified 7D-PL mount camera

I met Illya Friedman from hotrodcameras.com last year when I went to Joshua Tree with a pre-production GH1. He had a PL lens adaptor for the GH1 and brought some very nice Glass with him.

Well he has done something pretty serious here and taken a normal 7D and turned it into a serious movie making machine by removing the mirror box and replacing the EOS mount with a rugged as hell PL mount. This is serious stuff!! Read more

Review of new “Beachtek DXA-SLR” XLR adaptor for HD-DSLR cameras

Sound has always been one of the biggest stumbling blocks for HD-DSLRs for me. Documentary filming is one of my biggest passions and until now I have always had to try and cope with dual system sound or a mic like the Rode Video Mic plugged into the mic input of the camera and left on auto.

New short “Toronto Falls”: Shooting timelapse through windows!

476x238bloombannerV1

zfinderADforBLOOMV3

As some of you know from the A&E Intervention: Timelapse that I was TRICKED into doing, I am loving my timelapse with my stills cameras. I am using all sorts. My Canon 5Dmk2, 7D, 500D, Lumix GF1, GH1, Ricoh GR3. Used loads.

I was in the US and Canada recently, in Chicago to do the Great Zacuto Shootout and then in Toronto to see Sara. Whilst there I had some great views, both from my hotel in Chicago. The Sutton Place Hotel who gave me a great view after I explained what I wanted to do, my hotel in Toronto, the CN Tower and the Hilton at Niagara Falls.

When I shot my short film “Sky”, much of it was from up high too…but not through glass. Glass causes many issues, some of which I hope to cover here.
