This has to be either the funniest thing I have ever seen or the most genius thing I have ever seen and I cannot work out which!!!
A company in Australia has taken the 5DmkII, modified it and house it in the body of an old Sony Betcam body. Adding a pre-amp, monitor, timelapse controller..You use the viewfinder and the monitor is on the side.

It was only a matter of time before someone would do this. It’s for rental only. I have to say it really is absolute genius/ insane!!! It looks like a big joke, but it isn’t April 1st and everything they have done is absolutely feasible with a bit of work!
You have to watch the video of it here. It’s awesome!
Check out their site here if you live near Sydney and want to rent it!

October 26, 2009 at 20:18I guess it would look more expensive to the unknowing punters…
If you quoted hundreds or thosands of pounds for a shoot and turned up with this then they might feel their money was well spent.

October 23, 2009 at 18:16So this rig has all the attachments but it’s still outputting the same aliased and moire prone images of the Canon scaling method. So while it looks good and pro like, it’s still a picture that the BBC and others just won’t allow on their broadcasts.
Now Scarlet will have a 2/3 sensor like the one on the demos in the low end, the pictures say nothing special but will complement well with 5D or 7D footage when you need deeper focus.
When they figure out the scaling, these cameras will be just what the industry dreamed for!

October 24, 2009 at 21:16i think this is just a bit of fun and won’t catch on but it’s a clever idea. BBC do allow 5d, just not for their HD channel.

October 23, 2009 at 05:24Ah,
I saw this piece of gear when I was trolling the interweb. At first I thought it was a bit over the top to call it the HYPER 35mm! But then I found out that one of the team members is a friend of mine….
Sony and Canon love child eh?

October 22, 2009 at 21:11Hang on a minute .. this is all fine and good but Phil, haven’t you already stated that the final MBit output is still too low for Broadcast? In which case, this camera will be limited, at best, to Corporate Video productions or at worst, cable TV, where VHS quality is the standard they stive for.
Having said that, these days it seems all bets are off when it comes to ‘quality’ images that go to air on Australian television!

October 22, 2009 at 19:44How does it work?!? do it record de image in some 100% digital way or it works like a digital 25mm adaptor?

October 22, 2009 at 18:47Silly question perhaps, but would this in any way bypass the whole 5DmkII jelly effect, no? ..I guess it’s just an all-you-need great rig, right?

October 22, 2009 at 16:50They should hollow out the inside of the casing and use it as a lens storage area.
Then you could justify to yourself carrying around the extra bulk.

October 22, 2009 at 16:17Haha, wow… totally speechless. The demo video is pretty sublime too, pity about the website but still.
Gotta hand it to my fellow Australians for taking the initiative *flex, flex* hahaha
